California Sexual Abuse Allegations Made Against Another Prominent Gymnastics Coach

December 31, 1969

In September, our Orange County, California Personal Injury Law firm published a blog post about allegations reported in the media against iconic US women's gymnastics coach Don Peters. Three women who formerly trained at SCATS, a gymnastics club in Huntington Beach, had come forward accusing Peters of having inappropriate sexual relations with them during the 80's. Now, according to CNN, another elite US gymnast coach is also facing accusations that he had abused former female gymnasts.

Several women are claiming that Doug Boger physically and sexually abused them decades ago. The parents of two of the alleged California abuse victims even paid for his defense in a trial that ended up with him acquitted of battery and child abuse in 1982.

The women are now in their 40s and 50s. Some of them say that he would sometimes kick them in the stomach or poke them with a toothpick. One alleged victim, Charmaine Carnes, even attributes a scar from a cigarette burn that is on her finger to Boger. Another woman, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan's daughter Kathy Riordan, says that after she told her dad that she witnessed a naked teammate leave Boger's bed during a road trip, and the other parents were notified, the adults decided to keep the incident quiet. Julie Whitman, the alleged victim who is leading the charge against Boger, said she decided to take action after finding out six years ago that he was still coaching. She wants to make sure no one else is harmed.

In 2010, after investigating the allegations against Boger, USA Gymnastics put him on its list of permanently ineligible coaches. However, he can still coach at gyms not affiliated with the governing body.

Child Abuse
Sexual abuse, physical abuse, and emotional abuse can have lifelong ramifications on its victims. While it is good that many people are no longer staying silent and they are coming forward to report what happened to them, such violations against children have been happening for a long time and under the cloak of silence.

"Fortunately, there are legal remedies that can allow many of the victims to pursue compensation from their perpetrators," said Howard Law, PC Founder and Anaheim Injury Attorney Vincent Howard. "Orange County, California sexual abuse recovery can also be sought from entities that allowed the incidents to happen, chose to look the other way, or were completely ignorant that anything inappropriate was taking place under their watch."

One need only look at the millions of dollars that the Roman Catholic Church has had to pay because for years so many of its priests were molesting young children.

"Even if it's been some time since you were sexually abused, it still may not be too late to pursue damages," said Orange County, California Injury Attorney Vincent Howard. Fortunately, it is now accepted that some abuse victims may repress their memories for years or are not ready to come forward to speak about what happened to them until long after the abuse has ended.
