Actos, the brand name medication for Pioglitazon, is used in addition to a diet and exercise program to treat Type II Diabetes—a condition in which the body does not produce enough insulin and cannot control blood sugar levels. Actos works by increasing the body’s susceptibility to insulin. In 2008, Actos was listed as one of the best-selling medications on the market, selling over $2.4 billion.
After numerous reports from the Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2007, the French Agency for the Safety of Health Products and Germany’s Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devises advised in 2011 that doctors not prescribe the medication until further review of the medication be performed. On June 15, 2011 the United States FDA announced that the use of Pioglitazon may be associated with increased risk of bladder cancer, and that they were to be added to the Warnings and Precautions label for medications containing Pioglitazon.
