Holding Your Physician Accountable – Where to Go to Check a Medical License

October 24, 2015

Here’s a simple question that’s bound to make you a little uncomfortable – Have you ever checked to see if your doctor’s medical license is in good standing? If you are like millions of Americans, you probably didn’t even know you COULD check to see if his or her license was in good standing; but the fact is, you can and you should.

The California “Verify a License” campaign is under way to educate consumers throughout the state that there is a place where they can go to see if their doctor is in good standing with the California Medical Board and to see if the doctor has any disciplinary actions on their record.

The process for checking a physician’s license has been made easy with a ‘one-click’ button on the Ca.gov Medical Board’s website, here is the link:

www.mbc.ca.gov

By clicking on ‘verify a license’, the website allows consumers to verify the standing of a California Medical License for numerous areas including: Physicians and Surgeons, Licensed Midwives, Psychoanalysts, Dispensing Opticians, Contact Lens Dispensers (both in-state and out-of-state), Polysomnographic Technicians, as well as numerous special medical programs.

According to Howard Law PC’s Vincent D. Howard, “Patients should know if the doctor they are trusting for their own care has had his or her license suspended or is facing disciplinary actions for medical or behavioral violations – knowing this kind of information is vital for patients.”

The California Medical Board, who is spearheading the “Verify a License” campaign oversees more than 130,000 doctors California and points out in a recent report that there are more than 500 doctors statewide are on probation for a variety of disciplinary actions including gross negligence, substance abuse, sexual misconduct, prescription violations, as well as other legal violations.

The attorneys at Howard Law PC want patients to be informed and encourage them to use the new “Verify a License” tool on the California Medical Board’s website.
