Costa Mesa is looking better and better.
According to the Daily Pilot, our city had zero traffic fatalities in 2012, which serves as the first year no one died on our roadways since 1984. Police officers say that the new, low number is the result of a combination of safe driving practices throughout the area and local law enforcement efforts.
This year isn't looking as well as we've already seen one traffic accident fatality. The accident occurred after a driver went into cardiac arrest and slammed into the wall of a CVS.
"We have periodic meetings where we as a Traffic Safety Bureau sit down with the Transportation Services Division and discuss problem spots and review accident patterns," said Lt. Rob Sharpnack with the Costa Mesa Police.
Our Costa Mesa car accident attorneys understand that there could be even more things done to help ensure the safety of travelers in the area. According to Lt. Sharpnack, officials could implement more projects to help to improve things like signage and signal timing.
According to the most recent statistics, there are over a million vehicles that drive throughout Costa Mesa each and every day. In 2011, there were 5 people who were killed in traffic accidents. In 2011, there was only one.
Just because there weren't any fatalities does not mean that there weren't any collision. In 2012, there were actually close to 50 DUI-related accidents that resulted in injuries. In 2011, there were about 52 and in 2010 there were close to 55. All of these accidents were completely avoidable, too. There should never be a reason to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. There are so many other (and safer) ways to get home. Unfortunately, drunk driving continues to be one of the leading causes of traffic accident fatalities.
Still, drunk drivers were all over our roadways. In addition to the injury accidents named above, there were also another 120 DUI-related accidents that did not result in any injuries in 2012. Another 110 in 2011 and more than 140 in 2010.
Close by, Newport Beach saw five fatal traffic accidents last year. In 2011, there were 6 fatalities.
With the news, we're asking drivers not to hang up their concerns. Car accidents are still a very real threat and can happen in the blink of an eye. Now it's more important than ever to be safe out there.
Don't get us wrong, we'd like to thank drivers for their superb driving skills. Safe roadways and accident avoidance lies in your hands. Stay alert behind the wheel and be a defensive driver out there. With the recovering economy, we can expect more cars on our roadways. With more cars, we can also expect an increase in the risks for accidents. Use the New Year to renew your dedication to better driving habits. It's a resolution that could wind up saving lives.
