With summer now here and so many people heading to the beach, pool or lake to swim, jump onto a boat, or ride a personal water craft, it is important that everyone remain mindful of staying safe even as they have a good time. Unfortunately, accidents can happen despite people's best intentions and it is the victims that end up suffering.

One of the more recent tragic incidents national headlines is a jet ski accident that has left singer Usher's stepson brain dead. 11-year-old Kyle Glover, who is the son of the performer's ex-wife Tameka Foster, sustained his catastrophic injuries when he and a friend were tubing and they were struck by a personal watercraft in Georgia on Friday. His friend, a 15-year-old girl, also was injured, and the two of them were flown to the hospital for treatment.

Now, investigators are trying to determine what happened. The jet skier that struck them is reportedly someone who was part of the group who was with Glover. According to the state, the Critical Incident Response Team will recreate the jet ski accident using special computer programs.

Personal Water Accidents

Jet ski accidents can cause serious injury to the person on the watercraft or to someone in the water that ends up getting struck by one. Hundreds of people are killed in personal watercraft accidents every year with some 3000 others surviving with injuries.

Common causes of personal watercraft accidents:
• Inexperienced boaters
• Inexperienced riders
• Operator/rider inattention
• Speeding
• Alcohol
• Boat or jet ski malfunction/defect
• Not looking out for swimmers or other boats
• Poor weather or water conditions
• Wake or wave force
• Improper maintenance

"You may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, rehabilitation costs, pain and suffering, or wrongful death," said Anaheim boating accident attorney Vincent Howard.

Depending on the specifics of what happened, possible negligent parties may include the boat operator, the jet ski rider, the jet ski manufacturer, the rental company, and/or the maintenance company. Also, for a person who is struck by a personal water craft, especially one going at a fast speed, not only can the impact of the collision cause major injuries but also there is the threat of drowning, which may lead to permanent brain injury and other disabilities if a swimmer is lucky enough to survive.
